Jan. 27 (Sat), 8:30 pm—Comedy Benefit, the Sultans of Satire: Middle East Comic Relief, Special 10th Edition
What's funny about the Middle East?
Plenty! Is there any hope for peace? We think so...Nothing brings us together quite like humor and satire. This special 10th edition of the popular Levantine Cultural Center series, "Sultans of Satire" features Ahmed Ahmed, Maz Jobrani, Mike Batayeh, Elham Jazab, Aron Kader, Peter Shahriari, Gülden, Max Amini and Noel Elgrably, along with a very special mystery comedian...with Fariborz as the Master of Ceremonies! And special appearance by the Ya M.E.L.A. Middle East Dance Troupe...
ABOUT GÜLDEN:
A paid regular at the Comedy Store, the Laugh Factory, and the Ice House in Los Angeles, Gülden was born in Istanbul and came to the U.S. after high school for higher education. She completed her B.A. and M.S. and is working on a Ph.D. in Business Administration. After she became an American citizen, she started doing comedy, which made all her relatives and her parents disown her. Just as in her own life, her comedy takes a twisted look at her relationships with her family, men, and various ethnic groups. She also works for "Catch A Rising Star." She has a standup comedy DVD coming up. She was a lead in a sitcom pilot called "Keep'em Up", she's been on the "Leeza Talk Show" and the "Drew Carey Show."
This event is a benefit for Levantine Cultural Center, which has explored contemporary arts and cultures of the Mediterranean and Middle East, building bridges to peace since 2001. The center has presented more than 250 concerts, lectures, author events, comedy/satire shows, film screenings/Q & As, classes and other public programs. Levantine Cultural Center has worked with many nonprofit organizations and associations to help promote more in-depth and alternative information on the Middle East, as a needed counterweight to the constant barrage of bad news and negative messages (war, terrorism, corruption). In all the melee, watching the mainstream media about conflict in the Middle East, we forget the people, the rich cultures, and those who are working for peace every day.
The Sultans of Satire: Middle East Comic Relief is an occasion for topical satire and savage humor about our post-9/11 world. These young comedians of Arab, Iranian, Jewish and Turkish heritage spoof the "clash of civilizations" between "us" and "them"—between America/the West and the Arab/Muslim East. These Americans are funny people who also work steadily as dramatic actors in film, television and theatre (bios below).

CUMARTES, HAZRAN 23, 2012
The Second "Kazakhstan Montage of Cinemas: Film & Cultural Festival" launches at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) in Los Angeles on Aug. 3 for a one-week celebration of Kazakh cinema and culture, including musicians.
The festival is a stellar opportunity for directors, producers, location scouts, and the general public to get an understanding and appreciation of this exotic locale without leaving home.
Sweeping from the Caspian Sea on its Russian border to the Altai Mountain range on the Chinese border, Kazakhstan has a rich nomadic history as well as a powerful current tapestry of cultures. Since gaining independence in 1991, the Central Asian Republic has embraced its remarkable filmmaking past that dates back to the 1930's, when Sergei Eisenstein made his classic “Ivan the Terrible” in this mystic land, and has even given rise to several "New Wave" movements.
Opening night on Aug. 3rd begins with a reception at 7 pm, and includes a program of live entertainment until 11 pm, at the DGA Theater.
Sponsored by Kazakh Geographic Society (KazGeo.kz ), helixfilmsinc.com , the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Honorary Consulate of Kazakhstan in Los Angeles, the festival includes Advisory Board Members Steven-Charles Jaffe (GHOST, K19), David Marconi (Screenwriter, ENEMY OF THE STATE), and Ambassador Erlan Idrissov.
Tickets cost $10 (including free parking) can be purchased from the festival’s website. "Kazakhstan Montage of Cinemas: Film & Cultural Festival 2012" will be held Aug. 3 - 9 at the Directors Guild of America on 7920 Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles, California
